Evariste Galois: 1811-1832

Galois

Evariste Galois died at 20, from a gunshot wound to the abdomen, in a duel with a mysterious opponent. Despite this tragically early end, his mathematical publications can truly be said to have changed the mathematical world.
Hermann Weyl said: “This letter [his last], if judged by the novelty and profundity of ideas it contains, is perhaps the most substantial piece of writing in the whole literature of mankind.”
